These rubble walls were in fact also built behind the front Ashlar wall – the Ashlar only being required on the front to give the walls their impressive smooth appearance and the limited mortar giving the impression of ‘no join’ between each rectangular piece of stone. The rubble provided the front walls with thickness and support and the rubble of course, would have been cheaper than the Ashlar, not to mention the rubble wall Stonemasons of the time being cheaper to employ than those who put together the Ashlar facades.
