Stonemasonry Bath
Stonemasonry & Architecture in Bath
Anyone who’s ever visited Bath will know that the Stonemasons who helped to shape the City’s beautiful architecture were indeed a talented group of individuals. As you wander around Bath, you’ll see inumerous ornately built buildings and houses that reflect the not so distant history of the City. Just take a look at Queen Square, Gay Street, The Circus, The Royal Crescent and Camden Crescent, but don’t stop there – almost everywhere you go within the central regions of the City of Bath you’ll come across wonderful examples of architecture, many built using Ashlar frontages, Ashlar being the name given to a rectangular piece of stone that has been prepared by a Stonemason’s yard ready for the building, by giving a smooth stone appearance on the outward facing side.
When these magnificent buildings were being erected, the front of the building or house (façade) was everything and needed to be impressive as it faced out towards the onlooker. The windows, doorways and entrance porches of many Bath buildings are indeed impressive to look at but, unless the rear of the property was in main view, only a rubble wall was used for this side. These rubble walls were in fact also built behind the front Ashlar wall – the Ashlar only being required on the front to give the walls their impressive smooth appearance and the limited mortar giving the impression of ‘no join’ between each rectangular piece of stone. The rubble provided the front walls with thickness and support and the rubble of course, would have been cheaper than the Ashlar, not to mention the rubble wall Stonemasons of the time being cheaper to employ than those who put together the Ashlar facades.
