Welcome to Bath Business Web and welcome also, to the beautiful and historic City of Bath.  If you’ve visited Bath, or are lucky enough to live in or around Bath, you’ll know what a wonderful City it is, of its historic links, famous names who have lived in Bath, of the huge variety of places to see, go, things to do, establishments to eat out at and of the rich variety of Businesses located in and around Bath.  Bath Business Web invite you now to re-visit some of the history of the City of Bath and discover some of its secrets and hidden depths, be they legend or true fact.  Have you heard of King Bladud?  Well that’s where we’ll begin and though stories tell that Bladud founded the City of Bath in around 860 BC, there’s actually no historic evidence that he ever existed, still, the story, which has been embellished over time, has a certain charm to it.

Swainswick - Home to The Swineherd            Bath Business Web

Bladud had been sent to Athens by his father to be educated in the liberal arts, unfortunately he contracted Leprosy whilst there and on his return to his home country, was imprisoned.  Bladud escaped from his imprisonment and went into hiding and eventually gained employment as a Swineherd in Swainswick, Swainswick in fact being the home of the founding Directors of Bath Business Web.

A Warm, Muddy Discovery            Bath Business Web

Bladud observed that his herd of pigs would in cold weather, head for an alder-moor and when they emerged, would be covered in a black mud.  He further noticed that the pigs that covered themselves in the mud didn’t seem to suffer from skin diseases as other pigs did.  On investigation, he realised that the mud was warm and the pigs enjoyed the heat, hence rolling around in it and becoming covered.  Bladud began to cover himself in the warm black mud and as a result, cured his Leprosy.

He was then restored to his status as heir apparent (some say by producing a ring that his mother had given him before he left for Athens, by way of proving of who he was).  Bladud, or as he eventually became known King Bladud, then founded Bath, so that others might benefit from the healing waters that he had discovered there.

Worship of The Goddess Sulis Minerva            Bath Business Web

Much is known about the Roman history of the City of Bath and visitors to the City can visit the Roman Baths including the Sacred Spring, Roman Bath House, Roman Temple and view finds that have been collected over the years, including curses inscribed onto Pewter and thrown into the Spring, huge numbers of Roman coins and other offerings that were believed to have been made to the Goddess Sulis Minerva.  In fact the head of the statue of Sulis Minerva, which would have once stood within the Roman Temple perhaps, remains intact and on display – it is said that the statue was attacked and pulled down by the Saxons – luckily they weren’t totally successful in destroying it.
