Doors are vulnerable to forcing, and are often used by burglars for a quick exit. For both reasons, it's worth fitting strong locks and bolts. Don't just rely on old-fashioned night latch, which offers no security at all - it is only as strong as the screws holding it to the door, and a thief can easily break a pane of glass to operate it or simply slide back the bolt with a credit card. Some locks and bolts are designed specifically for use on front doors, while others are made for securing back or side doors.
Choosing the right lock
The door by which you leave the house - usually the front door - needs a particularly strong lock because it can't be bolted from inside expcept for when you are at home. Back and side doors need bolts top and bottom as extra security against them being forced open from outside. You should also fit a lock to these doors, to prevent thieves making an easy getaway with their loot! The basic choice of lock is between mortise and rim types.
A rim lock can be fitted to a final-exit door - it locks automatically as the door is closed, so that the bolt cannot be forced back without a key except by turning the knob on the inside. One complete turn of the key prevents the lock being operated even from inside, so if a burglar is inside they can't walk out of the front door with your posessions.
Mortise locks are fitted into a slot cut in the edge of the door, so it cannot be easily tampered with. There are various patterns to suit the width of the door stile and the location of the door. A mortise sashlock is suitable for back and side doors. It has a handle on each side to operate a springbolt, and a key-operated deadbolt that can't be pushed back once the door is closed. Purely key-operated mortise locks are best for final-exit doors, where no handle is necessary. Some locks are specifically intended for doors that open to the left or to the right.
